Perhaps the easiest way to explain Life Coaching is to first describe what it is not. Life Coaching is not therapy, in the traditional sense, although the life- coaching program bases it roots on the principles of Humanistic & Narrative Therapy, it goes one step further and allows for more direct language between client and coach. Unlike therapists, Life Coaches can be more direct and offer advice to encourage and motivate individuals towards positive decision-making.
While therapists are trained to repair mental disorders and resolving past issues or interpersonal relationships, life coaching helps people move from their current situation towards their goals. This approach can be effective for children, adolescents and adults. Should your child benefit from more traditional therapeutic techniques, however, appropriate referrals are provided.
Life Coaching is a more direct way of approaching a situation. Because of its direct approach, Life Coaching is a great alternative for teens and young adults. Sometimes they need a push in the right direction but are reluctant to disclose their feelings and emotions. For this reason, a good life coach may be the key component to your child's success!
As a parent, you set expectations for your child and expect him/her to follow your suggested path. For many reasons, your teenager may be defiant or purposefully disrespectful. A life coach is trained to play the role of a neutral third party and has strategies that help reduce the stress on both the parents and teens. The expectations still get across, but the life coach delivers it in a language that your teen can appreciate.
Now, your teen becomes engaged in communication and is accountable to the life coach as well as to you…the parents. A perfect opportunity for parents to become supporting actors instead of constant disciplinarians.
At TEENS ON TRACK, the focus of life-coaching is primarily on academics. We want your child to work up to his or her full potential in the classroom and therefore, we center the program on scholastic achievement. We identify goals and obstacles, and create action steps to get back on track. A positive reinforcement and support approach teaches your teen to believe in himself. Once this happens in the classroom, the same confidence extends to others aspects of their lives. It is amazing how the increase of self-confidence is proportionate to the resolution of other problems!
